Watertown, Connecticut – State police have charged a Watertown police officer with stealing donated jewelry from a charity raffle last month while he was off-duty, they said.
Officer Christopher Masayda, 26, was charged with fifth-degree larceny and second-degree breach of peace in connection with the early-October theft during a police department sponsored charity golf game at Crestbrook Park Golf Course.
State troopers said that Masayda also got into a fight with someone who accused him of stealing the watch and bracelet, valued at $595.
Watertown police had acknowledged the alleged misconduct by one of their officers last week, but did not provide specifics of what happened.
On Monday, when Masayda’s arrest was announced by state police, Watertown Police Chief John Gavallas said the department has opened an internal investigation into the officer’s reported actions.
“The events reported today are deeply disturbing and very troubling. However, they are the actions of a single individual and they do not reflect the behavior of the hardworking men and women of this department,” Gavallas said in a statement.
