NEW YORK CITY — Dr. Craig Spencer has been confirmed by tests to have the Ebola virus, marking the first officially reported case in the city.

Although the recent announcement has startled residents of the metropolis, Mayor Bill de Blasio maintains that there is nothing to be alarmed about.

The Associated Press reports:

“We want to state at the outset that New Yorkers have no reason to be alarmed,” de Blasio said. “New Yorkers who have not been exposed are not at all at risk.”

Spencer, 33, had been working in Guinea. He returned more than a week ago and reported Thursday coming down with a 103-degree fever and diarrhea. He was being treated in an isolation ward at Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital, a designated Ebola center.

It was also reported that the infected man may have traversed the city for days while being contagious, visiting a bowling alley, riding on subway trains and in at least one cab.
