Conference on Afghan future kicks off

Security was tight on Thursday as representatives, mostly foreign ministers from 30 countries including Iran, Russia, China, and Turkey, took part in the one-day conference which follows a meeting in Istanbul last November.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai made the opening speech, calling on the international community to help his country achieve peace and stability.

Delegates from international organizations such as NATO, the European Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the United Nations attended the meeting.

The conference is focused on security transfer after US-led troops’ withdrawal in 2014 and peace processes as well as regional strategies to combat terrorism and drug trafficking.

During the meeting, regional strategies to tackle natural disasters and strengthen trade and economic relations will also be discussed.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan, despite the presence of some 130,000 foreign forces in the country ten years after the beginning of the US-led war in 2001.

According to February report by the United Nations, 2011 was the deadliest year on record for Afghan civilians due to the violence including bomb and militants attacks in the country. The death toll rose eight percent compared to the year before and was roughly double the figure for 2007.

Meanwhile, the rise in civilian casualties in US-led NATO attacks has strained relations between Karzai and his Western backers, who are under increasing pressure at home over the unpopular war.
