The family of an Antelope Valley, Calif., dog, who was condemned to death late last week, has been granted a stay of execution for their pet. On Friday, the Justice for JoJo Facebook page issued the following news to their fans:
We got the stay! JOJO is SAFE!!!!!
We got the stay with emergency writ from court of appeal!
According to Thursday’s ABC 7 News, the future looked bleak for the young shepherd mix after a judge decided to uphold the Los Angeles County Animal Control’s seizure of the dog, who was deemed vicious following bites to two children after escaping from his home several months ago.
JoJo’s owner, Denise Wheeler, maintains that her dog was tormented and taunted prior to the bites, and that her dog is not vicious, but was provoked and was only defending himself.
The family’s attorney, Talitha Wegner agreed, stating:
But if the dog was provoked, then it can’t be determined to be vicious.
A petition, outlining the repeated teasing that JoJo endured, and asking for the “vicious” label to be eliminated and for his life to be spared, has been signed over 6,000 times.
Following the abrupt about face in court on Friday, there is finally hope that JoJo may have a future.
