Bryson was driving a Lexus on San Gabriel Boulevard in Los Angeles shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday when he rear-ended a Buick as it was waiting for a train to pass, according to a statement issued on Monday by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the San Gabriel Police Department.
Bryson spoke briefly with the three occupants and then hit their car again as he was leaving the site of the accident, according to the statement. The three people followed Bryson’s car while calling police.
Bryson was cited for the hit-and-run, although he has not been formally charged.
Bryson then caused a second collision minutes later in the nearby city of Rosemead, striking a car with two people inside, police officials said. Officers found him alone and unconscious behind the wheel of his car. He was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital.
Commerce Department spokeswoman Jennifer Friedman issued a statement on Monday, confirming the reports.
“Secretary Bryson was involved in a traffic accident in Los Angeles over the weekend. He suffered a seizure,” Friedman said.
“He was taken to the hospital for examination and remained overnight for observation. He was released and has returned to Washington. The investigation is ongoing.”
Bryson was chairman of Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison, for 18 years until 2008. He was sworn in as the secretary of commerce in October 2011.
