nsnbc : The commander of Turkey’s Incirlik Airbase, General Bekir Ercan Van, is reportedly among the about 2,800 who were detained after the failed military coup on July 15. The base houses US nuclear weapons and is used for US air raids in Syria and Iraq. The right to raise the US flag at the base has previously caused a row between Turkey and the USA.
Turkish officials announced that General Bekir Ercan Van has been detained for questioning about his alleged complicity and role in the failed military coup on July 15.
The base commander was detained on Sunday. The arrest came after movements in and out of the base were temporarily restricted on Saturday.
The base is used by NATO and to store U.S.’ tactical nuclear weapons. The Incirlic airbase is also used by the US Air Force to launch air strikes in Syria, in violation of international law, and in Iraq.
In November 2015 the United States deployed deployed additional military jets to NATO member Turkey to “secure Turkish airspace”. The fist 6 of 12 U.S. Air Force F-15C Eagle fighter jets have arrived at the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey on November 6.
The jets were reportedly tasked with conducting combat air patrols on the request of the Turkish government to secure Turkish air space. Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook commented that the Turkish request had come “on the heels of incursions we saw by Russians… and it’s a request we’ve honored”. Cook added that the deployment reflects “both our commitment to ensure the safety of our NATO ally and our commitment to defeat /the Islamic State a.k.a. ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) in Iraq and Syria.
However, the base is no stranger to controversy between the USA and Turkey. In July 2014 a crisis over sovereignty broke out between the U.S. and Turkey when Turkish authorities ordered all flags to be flown on half mast over the situation in Gaza. Disagreements about whether Turkish authorities could order the U.S. flag at embassies, consulates and the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey to be flown half mast caused a crisis about sovereignty.
It is noteworthy that Turkey accuses the US-based cleric Fetullah Gülen and the Gülenist Hizmet organization for involvement in the failed coup on July 15. Gülen who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, USA, is known for links to the CIA, Turkey’s deep State as well as to NATO intelligence. Whether or not General Bekir Ercan Van actually was linked to the failed coup, and if so, his affiliations and role, remains to be seen. So far, very little information about the 2,800 who were detained has transpired, and nobody seems to want to take ownership of the failed coup.
