nsnbc : Colombian Peace Talks between the government and the FARC-EP have come to an intermediate halt over the government’s sudden and surprising refusal to acknowledge the existence of far-right paramilitaries including Los Urabenos.
The Colombian administration of President Juan Manuel Santos refused to recognize the existence of right-wing neo-paramilitaries after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – Peoples’ Army (FARC-EP) called for the disarmament and dismantlement of Los Urabenos as an important precondition for a final peace accord and the decommissioning of the FARC-EP’s weapons.
Los Urabenos is an organization that was established after the right-wing AUC officially demobilized and ceased to exist in 2006. The Colombian government as well as the United States have since then held the official position that “right-wing paramilitaries no longer exist” in Colombia.
Ironically, the Santos’ administration, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the FARC-EP, the second-largest leftist guerrilla ELN that also has launched official peace talks, the UN, and independent observers have previously agreed that right-wing neo-paramilitaries today pose the greatest risk to peace and stability in Colombia.
Earlier this month Los Urabenos shut down the city of Medellin and large swaps of Colombia, enforcing a business and transportation lockdown, terrorizing the population, business owners and public officials. In March the Foundation for Peace and Reconciliation (PARES) warned that many of Colombia’s municipalities will be at risk and some at extreme risk after a disarmament of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – Peoples’ Army (FARC-EP).
