Coalition to target senior Labor MPs

The coalition is reportedly aiming to defeat all potential Labor leaders at the next federal election by employing what it’s calling a “decapitating strategy”.

Plans have been made by the coalition to run heavily-resourced strong candidates in NSW seats held by Greg Combet, Jason Clare and Chris Bowen and in Kevin Rudd’s seat in Queensland.

“A particular focus in the Liberal campaign in NSW will be to target what traditionally have been safe Labor seats,” a senior Liberal figure told News Ltd.

“These are reserved for senior Labor figures – seats like Blaxland, McMahon and Charlton.”

Mr Clare holds his seat of Blaxland with a 12.23 per cent margin, Mr Combet holds Charlton with a 12.67 per cent margin and Mr Bowen has a 7.81 per cent margin in his seat of McMahon.

The strategy is modelled on tactics employed by the Queensland LNP, which crushed Labor in the recent state election.

“There’s a great capacity for us for the first time ever to win those seats,” the senior Liberal source said.

“We’re well resourced, we’re well funded, Labor’s having a degree of difficulty because its corporate fundraising has all but dried up.”

The coalition is picking its battles knowing not all senior Labor figures will be able to be defeated, such as favoured leadership candidate Bill Shorten, who is seen as untouchable holding a 16.86 per cent margin in the Victorian seat of Maribyrnong.
