A MAN shot outside a Sydney sex club appears to have provoked a group of thieves targeting a nearby car workshop, the club’s owner says.
Police are viewing CCTV footage of the incident as they hunt up to three men who opened fire outside Aarows gay, bisexual and swingers club at Rydalmere, in Sydney’s west, about 1am (AEST) on Wednesday.
The 52-year-old man, who apparently disturbed the thieves on his way into the club, was shot in the back, legs and groin and is in a stable condition in Westmead Hospital.
Aarows co-owner Alan, who declined to give his surname, said the man had foolhardily approached the men before he was shot.
“Unfortunately, this poor guy is in hospital. But he’s an idiot, an absolute idiot.
“Why on earth would you go up to guys that you don’t know at that time of night and yell and scream? He’s provoked them.”
Alan said a decision by staff to open the metal door at the rear of the club to drag the man inside could have led to disaster.
“I understand they’re trying to help the guy but geez they opened the door to a disaster,” he told AAP.
Alan said a car mechanics business specialising in modifying high-performance vehicles had been operating next door to the club.
He suspects the offenders, who were loitering in the car park of the neighbouring business, were there to steal a car.
He said the CCTV footage shows two men standing outside a car and another man in what Alan described as a potential getaway vehicle.
The victim had just parked his own car and was heading towards the door of the club when he turned and confronted the group.
“He’s come up and he’s yelling at them,” Alan said.
“He’s a big guy. You can see his arms like he’s really upset.
“They’ve got balaclavas or rags wrapped around their heads, one of them had a gun.
“They punched him, they kicked him and they shot him. It’s pretty horrific stuff.”
Police are seeking two men of Middle Eastern appearance over the incident, the latest in a spate of shootings in Sydney’s west.
On its website Aarows is described as a social club that offers “discreet rear private entry 24 hours a day, seven days a week” in a venue where safe sex is permitted for “all genders”.
Inspector Glen Parks said police were investigating if the offenders were intending to steal a car.
“That’s part of our inquiry,” Insp Parks told AAP.
“At this particular point we’re still piecing it all together.”
The victim was not known to police and the shooting is not being treated as a hate crime.
