Clif Bar Rewards Twitter Users for Getting Outside

Clif Bar, the maker of organic snack bars and other products, has been responsible for a variety of eco-minded campaigns, from creating an iPhone app that identifies green ski resorts to helping the world’s largest cycling festival go carbon neutral. Now, the company has created the first geo-location Twitter campaign that is rewarding consumers for getting outside.

The campaign is unique because Twitter doesn’t allow advertisers to target people in specific locations (just regions), but Clif Bar has come up with a way around that by having Twitter users send a geo-tagged tweet to @CLIFMojoGo. The company is then manually verifying that the user is at a park, on a trail, at the beach or otherwise communing with nature, then sending that user a coupon for a free trail mix bar. Users are also entered to win a Garmin GPS watch and other “adventure gear.”

While this is a neat way to reward people for getting outside, it’s a really genius marketing campaign. Clif is having interested Twitter users do the work of showing them where they are specifically located, letting the company generate even more precisely targeted advertising and promotions. It’s pretty interesting to see a company that we love for its focus on sustainability coming up with innovative ways to use technology to reach consumers.
