Clashes rage on in Syria despite truce

Gunfire was reported in Jisreen, a suburb of Damascus, and the city of Rastan in Homs during the early hours of Monday.

The latest clashes in Syria come at a time when armed groups continue carrying out sporadic attacks despite the ceasefire, which was part of a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in March.

On May 10, Syrian state TV said 55 people were killed and about 400 injured in two bomb attacks carried out by the “terrorists” on a main freeway in southern Damascus.

The bombings in Damascus were conducted a day after a similar attack targeted a Syrian military truck escorting a convoy of UN observers near the southwestern city of Dara’a on May 9. Six Syrian soldiers were wounded in the attack.

Hassan Siklawi, a representative of the UN mission in Syria, said on Sunday that 189 observers are currently stationed in Syria to monitor the truce.

The first group of the UN observers arrived in Damascus on April 15. The observers were approved for the mission according to UN Security Council Resolution 2042 passed on April 14.

On April 21, the UN Security Council met and unanimously voted on Resolution 2043 to send a mission of 300 observers to Syria.
