Clamp down on crocs: LNP

Crocodiles would be prevented from entering popular recreational areas under a Liberal National Party (LNP) government.

Under the plan, exclusion zones would be created where crocodiles would be prevented from entering so that people could safely swim in and use the waterways.

But the LNP’s statement did not specify how this would be done.

Any crocodiles found near boat ramps and marinas would be also removed as well as any crocodile that exhibits unprovoked, aggressive behaviour.

Crocodile farmers or zoo staff would be asked to remove any crocodile identified as a problem.

LNP leader Campbell Newman said crocodiles had been protected in Queensland for decades and numbers in the wild had increased significantly, increasing safety concerns.

“We need to strike a balance between conserving crocs and ensuring people don’t get hurt,” said Mr Newman told reporters in Innisfail on Wednesday.

Environment Minister Vicky Darling says Campbell Newman’s crocodile strategy was already happening in Queensland under the Bligh government.

She said the government took a zero tolerance approach to problem crocodiles that threatened public safety.

“We always have and always will put community safety first,” Ms Darling said in a statement.

The removal of 31 crocodiles in the past five years demonstrated that.

“Every crocodile report is investigated,” she said. “If the crocodile poses an unacceptable risk it will be removed.”

Ms Darling said the LNP’s plan was a hollow policy announcement with no detail or substance.
