Christmas Island activates emergency plan

Christmas Island has activated its emergency management plan and is preparing its hospital and medical staff to deal with up to 200 asylum seekers after the boat they were on capsized en route to Australia.

Australian and Indonesian authorities have started a rescue operation after the boat capsized about 200km north of Christmas Island, with fears that as many as 75 people have drowned.

The stricken vessel, believed to have had about 200 people on board, was spotted by an Australian Customs and Border Protection surveillance aircraft about 3pm (AEST) on Thursday.

Christmas Island acting administrator Steven Clay said the island’s emergency management plan had been activated by the territory controller and the local hospital was on standby to help with any casualties.

He said authorities did not yet know how many people to expect.

“We’ll get that information as soon as possible,” Mr Clay told ABC television.

“What we’ve done is we’ve got people on standby for whatever emergency might arise.”

He said the island’s chief medical officer had taken charge and marshalled doctors and nurses.

“Christmas Island is a fairly small hospital by normal standards,” Mr Clay said.

“It’s a remote community and it’s not meant to cater for that sort of emergency but we will deal with it the best we can.”

Mr Clay predicted the latest asylum seeker boat capsize could open old wounds on the island following the SIEV 221 capsize in which more than 50 asylum seekers, including women and children, died in December 2010.

“This is a fairly resilient community here, but if this does turn out to be a tragedy then we have to be sensitive to the fact that this could open some old wounds … from the previous tragedy that occurred here,” he said.

“We have to be aware of that and make sure that we give whatever assistance to any casualties but also the residents as needed.”
