Christmas crash kills two in NSW

Two people have died and a dog was injured when a car veered off the road in northern NSW.

The car was travelling south on the Pacific Highway, South Tweed Heads at about 1.20am (AEDT) on Sunday when it left the road and crashed into a steel guard rail.

It then crossed both lanes and crashed into a concrete pillar off the Greenway Driver Overpass.

The 49-year-old male driver suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.

The 50-year-old female passenger was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital, where she later died.

A German Shepherd-cross puppy was found in the car and has been taken into police care.

The fatalities were the second and third deaths in NSW during the Christmas road toll period, and brings the national total up to eight.

(EDS: The national road toll period runs from 0001 December 23, 2011 until 2359 January 3, 2012, local times, in line with the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Board.)
