Chinese village turns school into car dealership

There was particular outrage that the school had been built using £25,000 of
charitable donations from Run Run Shaw, a Hong Kong tycoon turned
philanthropist.

Officials in Zhaocun said the pupils had been moved because of fears over a
high-speed rail line nearby. “That is why parents proposed renovating
the old school [instead],” said Li Wusheng, the head of the village’s
supervision committee. “Also, the village owed money to the
construction crew, so we decided to temporarily rent out the school to pay
them,” he added.

A spokesman for the Weida dealership, who declined to give his name, said they
had rented the premises legally.

“We have a contract. I had heard it was a school, but that is not our
responsibility. We pay them rent. We have rented this school for two years.
There has only been a problem because the officials in the village have
changed and the villagers have made trouble because of money,” he said. “The
villagers did not get the money, only the village secretary.”

Xinhua has reported that the dealership will now be demolished and the school
reinstated.
