Chinese bishop excommunicated after unauthorized ordination

(ANSA) – Vatican City, July 10 – Chinese bishop Joseph Yue Fusheng has been excommunicated according to the Vatican’s Code of Canon Law after his unauthorized ordination in the northern Chinese city of Harbin, Vatican sources said on Tuesday.

The move comes after Vatican warnings against the Chinese government’s plans to install Yue as bishop in the Manchuria region went unheeded and he was ordained last Friday.

Yue is one of three vice presidents of China’s Catholic Patriotic Association, the state-controlled version of the Catholic church that is not recognized by the Vatican. Tensions over mutual refusal for recognition have been building between the Vatican and Beijing, with the Vatican warning last week that the “illegitimate” ordination could exacerbate divisions among Catholics in China.

A large underground congregation that swears ultimate loyalty to the pope still thrives throughout China, which has an estimated six million Catholics who practice their faith both in and outside the state-authorized CPA.

In Tuesday’s statement, the Vatican commended Chinese bishops loyal to Rome that refused to take part in the unauthorized ordination while emphasizing that those who took part were open to sanctions “foreseen by the church”.

In the meantime, Catholic sources in China said on Tuesday that a bishop missing since last Saturday is being held by police in a seminary near Shanghai. Thaddheus Ma Daqin, 44, disappeared shortly after he announced his resignation from the CPA and was nominated as auxiliary bishop by the Vatican.
