China’s march to regulate the internet explained

Then there’s the 50-cent (wumao) army, a horde of individuals widely derided
by main of China’s ‘netizens’. Paid 50 Chinese cents for every pro-Communist
Party post they make on blogs, forums and microblogs, they are employed to
drum up support in sometimes less-than-fervent online communities.

However, not every strong-arm tactic of the authorities has been successful.
The controversial Green Dam project was a pre-installed content-control
system which placed computer users to under constant surveillance and acted
as an electronic censor. Originally intended to be compulsory on all new
Windows computers, the government bowed to widespread protest and the
project crumbled.

Given the Communist Party’s overall record, the new regulations on microblogs
may prove to be a success for the authorities.
