China wants Iran nuclear deal to remain intact

IRNA – Beijing has still kept its firm stance on supporting the July 2015 Iran nuclear deal, a senior Chinese official announced here on Thursday.

All parties have to be committed to the Iran deal, Guo Shengkun, Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China, said in a meeting held in this Russian resort city with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

China, as one of the key members of the Group5+1, played a leading role in the talks leading to signing the landmark 2015 deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Guo Shengkun said.

He described the US ant-JCPOA measures as unacceptable, expressing regret over Washington’s disloyalty.

US President Donald Trump has threatened that he will not extend suspension of anti-Iran sanctions, a decision which is to be made in mid-May.

China believes that US is secretly supporting those who bring insecurity to the region and makes effort to sanction Beijing, Tehran and Moscow in order to hurt them, he said.

On bilateral cooperation, Guo Shengkun said the 2016 visit of the Chinese President Xi Jinping to Iran opened a new chapter in the two countries’ relations.

He further said Iran has special position in China’s new international strategy.

He went on to say that Beijing and Tehran within the framework of ‘One Belt, One Road’ project can cooperate in the areas of campaign against terrorism and organized crimes, energy, railway and cyber security.

It was in 2013 that the Chinese president introduced the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative, a plan to link China with Asia, Africa and Europe via a network of ports, railways and roads.

Referring to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Chinese official said his country welcomes Iran’s membership in the organization.

Iran as the SCO observer will attend the future Shanghai summit, he said hoping the attendance would prepare the ground for its full membership.

Sochi security meeting is hosing representatives from 110 countries from all five continents.
