China, Vietnam dispute over Spratlys

Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi said in a statement on Friday that the Chinese accusations claiming the law is illegal and invalid are groundless, The Associated Press reported.

The new maritime law, reasserting Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Spratlys and Paracels, was adopted by Vietnam’s National Assembly on Thursday.

Nghi described the law as “normal lawmaking activity” and said Chinese opposition to it was regrettable.

China reportedly summoned the Vietnamese ambassador on Thursday to file a protest and reiterate its claim to sole jurisdiction over the islands off the South China Sea.

But Nghi said Vietnam has legal and historical evidence reaffirming its sovereignty.

However, Vietnam’s new law would not hinder efforts to find a solution to the territorial dispute, he added.

The South China Sea is a bone of contention between many countries, which make their own territorial claims, particularly the Spratly Islands, which are believed to have large reserves of offshore oil and gas. The region is also a fishing paradise and one of the busiest sea lanes in the world.

Vietnam and China both lay claim to the Paracels. Along with the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, the two countries also claim all or parts of the Spratlys.
