China urges flexibility in Iran talks

Addressing reporters in his regular briefing on Monday, Liu Weimin also called on Western negotiating parties to take Iran’s concerns into account “and seek a resolution to the Iran nuclear (energy) issue through dialog”.

He noted that Beijing was ready to work with other member states of the P5+1 to find a comprehensive and appropriate settlement to the Iran nuclear issue.

Weimin’s comments came after Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Baqeri wrote a letter to his counterpart in the P5+1, Helga Schmid, on Sunday, saying that the group’s lack of readiness to implement the previous agreements has slowed down the progress of the talks.

Iran and the P5+1 restarted multifaceted talks, which focused on Iran’s nuclear energy program, in Istanbul on April 14, 2012, after a 15-month hiatus.

The two sides had already held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010, and the other one in Istanbul in January 2011.

The second round of new talks between Iran and the P5+1 opened in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, on May 23, after which the negotiators agreed to continue the next round of the talks in Russia’s capital, Moscow, on June 18-19.

Following the Baghdad talks, Iran and the P5+1 also agreed to hold expert-level meetings before Moscow negotiations, in order to hammer out the agenda of those talks. The P5+1 representatives, however, ignored Iran’s request for taking part in expert meetings which caused Tehran to warn that P5+1’s foot-dragging will undermine the entire negotiations process.
