The Chinese Foreign Ministry says Beijing is set to dispatch a military ship to help safeguard the mission of eliminating Syria’s chemical weapons.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a news briefing on Thursday that her country “has decided to send a military ship to participate in the protection mission for the shipping of Syrian chemical weapons.”
“China hopes for the safe and smooth completion of the Syrian chemical weapons disposal work, which will not only contribute to a political solution of the Syrian issue and regional security, but also conform to all parties’ interests,” she stated.
Nordic vessels are set to collect the chemicals from the Syrian port city of Latakia and take them to a port in Italy, where they will be loaded onto a US ship for annihilation. The Chinese ship will escort the maritime transportation from Syria to Italy.
Meanwhile, lawmakers in Denmark have also approved to send the container ship Ark Futura and the frigate HDMS Esbern Snare, with their nearly 300 staff, to help the destruction of Syria’s chemicals at sea.
On Thursday, a month-long tender for the annihilation of industrial chemicals and toxic waste from Syria’s chemical weapons kicked off.
On the same day, Russia’s Ambassador to Syria Azamat Kulmukhametov said Moscow has deployed ten airplanes carrying equipment to assist in the elimination operation of Syria’s chemical weapons.
On September 27, the UN Security Council approved a resolution supporting a Russia-US deal to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons by mid-2014. The deal was reached after Moscow offered Syria to place its chemical weapons arsenal under international supervision and Damascus accepted the proposal.
The resolution prevented a US military strike on Syria under the baseless pretext that the Syrian government had been behind a fatal chemical attack on the outskirts of Damascus on August 21. Damascus strongly rejected the allegation.
