China says Iran addressed P5+1 package

Hong said the negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group – Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany – in the Russian capital on June 18, 19 were realistic and positive as the two sides engaged in direct and detailed talks, IRNA reported on Thursday.

Iran and the P5+1 agreed to establish a solid base for the resolution of the Iranian nuclear energy standoff by forming an experts group to study the details of the proposals, Hong added.

At the end of two-day talks between Iran and the P5+1 on Tuesday, the sides agreed to hold a follow-on technical level meeting in the Turkish city of Istanbul on July 3.

The Moscow meeting came after two days of negotiations in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in May.

Tehran and the P5+1 had earlier held three rounds of talks; one in Geneva in December 2010 and two in Istanbul in January 2011 and in April 2012.

Hong said China would like to play a constructive role in the long-term, comprehensive and appropriate resolution of the Iranian nuclear energy issue.

China believes that dialogue is the only means to resolve the Iranian nuclear energy issue, he added.

Simultaneous with the launch of the Iran-P5+1 talks in Moscow, China renewed support for Tehran’s right to enrich uranium for its civilian nuclear energy program.

“Iran is a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy,” Hong said on Monday.
