China Mobile to build 350,000 LTE base stations by 2014

Telco China Mobile aims to to build 350,000 Time-Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE) base stations in China by 2014 which will inlcude the 20,000 base stations expected to be completed this year.

During the “TD Smart Terminals and Mobile Internet Summit”, Ye Lin, an official from the technology department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the operator also plans to increase its Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) base stations from the 57,000 expected to be completed by end-2012 to more than 400,000 base stations in 2014, reported Tech Sina Monday.

Ye also noted that the second phase of TD-LTE trials has been completed at the end of June. The report said the first trial began in early-2011 and was completed by the end of the year.

The second trial began in January 2011 with tests of multi-mode TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA in six Chinese cities including Shanghai and Beijing, it added.

TD-LTE and TD-SCMA are China’s homegrown wireless technologies. TD-LTE has been popular worldwide but TD-SCDMA is limited to the Chinese market.
