China, Malaysia agree to elevate ties

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Friday that he agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping to encourage more joint military exercises and increase visits between the countries.

The Chinese president is visiting Malaysia before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Indonesia.

“We have agreed to strengthen our partnership with naval defense, joint military exercises to combat terrorism and promote security,” Xi told a news conference in the Malaysian administrative capital Putrajaya.

“This will create a sound environment for peace and the prosperity of both countries,” he added.

Xi’s meeting with Razak came after US President Barack Obama called off his tour of four Asian countries, including Malaysia, because of the US government shutdown.

Beijing is Kuala Lumpur’s biggest trading partner. The two Asian countries’ two-way trade in 2012 totaled 181 billion ringgit (USD57 billion).

Trade between China and Malaysia increased at an average annual of 15.7 percent between 2002 and 2012 and is expected to reach USD70 billion by the end of 2013.

Malaysia has also faced a rising flow of Chinese investments in recent years in sectors such as logistics and property.

In September, China’s Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group Ltd said it was purchasing a 40 percent stake in Malaysia’s Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd for 334.4 million ringgit (USD94 million).
