The major Chinese news portal Tencent reported on Monday that Beijing transferred two destroyers and nine other ex-navy ships to the surveillance fleet in an effort to “alleviate the insufficiency of vessels used to protect maritime interests.”
According to the report, China’s renovated destroyers called Nanjing and Nanning will be operational in the East and South China Seas. They reportedly have a displacement of 3,250 tons and a maximum speed of 32 knots each.
It is also said that the two vessels had been equipped with 130mm guns with a range of 29 kilometers (18 miles), anti-ship missiles and other weapons during the time they were operating in the Chinese navy.
The other nine vessels also include tugs, icebreakers and survey ships.
Yu Zhirong , a member of Beijing’s Research Centre for Chinese Marine Development, said, “The maritime surveillance team’s power has been greatly strengthened and its capacity to execute missions sharply improved, providing a fundamental guarantee for completing the currently arduous task to protect maritime interests.”
Japan and China have long been in a dispute over the sovereignty of a group of islands in the East China Sea, which would give the owner exclusive oil, mineral and fishing rights in the surrounding waters.
Also on Monday, Japan’s coast guard said three state-owned Chinese ships had entered the territorial waters.
Meanwhile, Japanese sources reported that Tokyo was considering plans to introduce the US Global Hawk unmanned aircraft by 2015 to boost surveillance of its waters near the disputed islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.
