The wife of ousted Chinese politburo member Bo Xilai is facing trial on charges of murdering a British businessman, the latest turn in a scandal that has sullied the image of government in Beijing.
Gu Kailai and family aide Zhang Xiaojun are poised to stand trial for allegedly poisoning businessman Neil Heywood last year over “conflict of economic interests.”
“The facts of the two defendants’ crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial. Therefore, the two defendants should be charged with intentional homicide,” said the Xinhua report summarizing the indictment.
Gu and Zhang will face trial in China’s eastern city of Hefei, far from Chongqing, the sprawling municipality in the southwest where Bo made his political base and where Heywood died in a hillside hotel in November. The death was initially blamed on excessive alcohol consumption.
If convicted, Gu would face the death penalty, although this is often commuted in the case of high-profile defendants.
The contentious dismissal of Bo earlier this year has sent shockwaves through Chinese Communist Party’s looming once-in-a-decade succession.
Although Bo has not been named as a suspect in the murder case, he is separately under investigation by party authorities and could also face trial later.
The 62-year-old party chief of Chongqing before his dismissal in March, Bo was widely seen as pushing for a spot in that new leadership.
Now, the Communist Party needs to adopt a unified stance on the divisive Bo case in the run-up to its upcoming congress.
