Child in armed robbery getaway car

A three-year-old child was in a getaway car used by his parents to escape two armed robberies on pokies venues in Melbourne, a court has heard.

The child’s father, James Peart, was armed with a baseball bat as he and another man, armed with a gun, stole more than $57,000 from two hotels, the Victorian County Court was told on Friday.

After the robberies, which were committed in September and October last year, Peart and his accomplice fled in a car driven by Peart’s partner, Jane Van Der Weyden, with their three-year-old son also on board.

On Friday, Peart, 24, and Van Der Weyden, 26, of Preston, pleaded guilty to two counts of armed robbery.

Prosecutor Catharine Sedgwick told the court the trio robbed the Ivanhoe Hotel on September 28 last year and robbed the Yarra Valley Country Club three days later.

During the robberies the third person pointed guns at the heads of gaming room staff, she said.

In a victim impact statement to the court, Sandra Sugars, a gaming attendant at the Ivanhoe Hotel, said she realised her life had changed forever.

“I feared for my life and I feared for my colleagues’ safety,” Ms Sugars said.

Ms Sedgwick said $54,300 was taken from the Yarra Valley Country Club, while the rest was taken from the Ivanhoe venue.

Peart told police he was ecstatic when he realised how much money he had stolen from the Yarra Valley venue and went on a drug binge for weeks.

Peart’s barrister Josh Taaffe said his client, a former Geelong Grammar student, had become addicted to heroin.

He said Peart was remorseful for his offending.

Van Der Weyden’s barrister Malcolm Thomas said his client had made full admissions to her role and also had a drug problem at the time of the offending.

Peart and Van Der Weyden will be sentenced at a later date.
