Child dies after explosion in England

On Tuesday 26 June, an explosion which occurred at around 11:15 a.m. in the Shaw area of Oldham as the blast tore through several homes, reported The Mail.

“Properties have almost disappeared. Many other homes have been hit by flying debris”, said a spokesperson for the fire service.

Eyewitnesses also said the scene of the explosion was like a “war zone”. Peter Walker, freelance photographer who lives in the neighborhood, took photos of the scene as soon as he heard the bang.

“There was complete devastated – it resembled a war zone. The houses were reduced to rubble and there was glass and bricks everywhere”, said Walker.

One man, named locally as Anthony Williamson, has been airlifted to hospital with “severe” burns to 80 percent of his body.

Reports also say that the explosion, which is believed to have been caused by a huge gas leak, has left a child dead, another person trapped, and a third unaccounted for.

Speaking with reporters at the scene, Superintendent Neil Evans of Greater Manchester Police confirmed the death of the child.

“Our main and immediate focus right now is to assist in ensuring those injured in the explosion get any medical assistance that they need”, said Evans.
