The self-taught lawyer took refuge in the US Embassy on April 26, after escaping house arrest in the eastern province of Shandong.
After a six-day stint, Chen left the embassy on Wednesday to get treatment for a leg injury at Beijing’s Chaoyang hospital.
In his phone interview with CNN, Chen however accused the US diplomatic mission of pushing him to leave the embassy premises.
“The embassy kept lobbying me to leave and promised to have people stay with me in the hospital, but this afternoon as soon as I checked into the hospital room, I noticed they were all gone,” Chen complained.
Meanwhile, China’s State Councilor Dai Bingguo criticized remarks by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who she cautioned China to protect human rights.
“The 1.3 billion Chinese people have the right to take a development path different from that of the United States and other western countries, a path that truly suits China’s national conditions and benefits not only the Chinese people but also the whole world,” he said.
Chen has spent seven years in prison or under house arrest after he exposed how thousands of women were forced to have abortions under China’s “one-child-policy.”
