Chen Guangcheng leaves US embassy: Q&A

That remains unclear. Six days ago, he managed to escape from house arrest and
enter the US Embassy in Beijing, where he remained until today.

What is China’s side of the story?

China strongly suspects that America colluded with Mr Chen to allow him to
enter the embassy and create an incident that would be embarrassing for
Beijing. “China demands the United States apologise for this,”
said the foreign ministry spokesman. “China will resolutely not accept
this.” The spokesman urged America to investigate how Mr Chen had
managed to gain entry to its diplomatic compound, strongly implying that he
must have had assistance.

Is this a genuine point?

On the face of it, yes. How could a blind man enter a heavily guarded US
embassy unless he was there with an official appointment?

What happened next?

Mr Chen left the embassy today and was apparently driven to a Beijing hospital
by the American ambassador himself. A deal seems to have emerged whereby Mr
Chen will not claim asylum or go into exile. Instead, he will be allowed to
move to a safer area of China, far away from the vengeful authorities in
Shandong, where he and his family will supposedly live in peace. Meanwhile,
the US has sought to mollify China by stressing how this was a one-off
incident that will not recur.

What is the back story to all this?

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, and Timothy Geithner, the Treasury
Secretary, are due in Beijing on Thursday for talks with their Chinese
counterparts. This “high level strategic dialogue”, which happens
annually, is designed to ease tension between the two powers. Instead, the
incident involving Mr Chen amounted to a diplomatic hand grenade on the eve
of the meeting. Consequently, both sides appear to have been anxious to
settle the affair.

What have we learned from all this?

Yet more evidence of the mutual suspicions that bedevils Sino-US relations.
Chinese officials appear to have concluded that Mr Chen was a pawn in an
American plot designed to interfere in their sovereign affairs and embarrass
them before the world. Whether the apparent deal over Mr Chen’s future will
hold is anyone’s guess.
