Queensland chef and burns survivor Matt Golinski has been officially discharged from hospital.
The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) said in a statement that Golinski, who lost his wife and three children in the home fire that injured him, was released from the burns unit on Friday.
But he faces possibly years of rehabilitation.
“Matt has spent the past four months starting to recover from the third degree burns inflicted to over 40 per cent of his body as the result of a tragic, home fire that claimed the lives of his wife, Rachael and their three children, Starlia, Willow and Sage, on December 26, 2011,” a hospital spokesman said.
“Although discharged, Matt will continue to receive treatment as an outpatient at the RBWH, as well as undergoing extensive rehabilitation therapy with teams of medical professionals in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.”
The spokesman said Golinski’s family credited the excellent, life-saving care he received from the hospital team, his own strong will and the love and support of family, friends and complete strangers as the reasons behind his early discharge from hospital.
“Upon guidance from his specialist medical team, Matt and his family are requesting privacy at this time so that Matt can continue to focus on his ongoing physical and emotional healing and readjust to life outside of the hospital.”
The spokesman said that, given it had been only seven weeks since Golinski awoke from his medically induced coma, he is still coming to terms with the reality of all that has happened including facing a future without his wife and three children.
“According to advice received by the RBWH Burns unit, Matt may be facing a further two to five years of physical therapy and surgeries,” the spokesman said.
