But critics accuse him of authoritarian instincts, mismanaging the economy and
squandering billions of dollars of oil revenues. His stridently anti-Western
foreign policy and vigorous promotion of his “Bolivarian revolution”
has left him with few allies aside from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of
Iran.
Mr Chavez faces re-election in October after more than 13 years in power. For
the first time, opposition parties have united behind a single candidate,
Henrique Capriles, and opinion polls suggest the race will be close. If Mr
Chavez’s health worsens, he may be unable to seek another term and a looming
transfer of power is rapidly becoming the dominant issue in Venezuelan
politics.
