An amateur archer has been charged with reckless wounding after a man was shot in the neck while walking in Sydney’s northwest.
The 23-year-old bowman is believed to have been firing arrows in his backyard at Cobar Way, Macquarie Park on Tuesday evening when one pierced a fence and plunged into a passer-by’s throat.
The wounded 24-year-old was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
Police arrested the 23-year-old, from Epping, and seized a powerful compound bow, likened by senior detectives to Robin Hood’s weapon of choice.
He was released after several hours of questioning and on Wednesday night was served a future court attendance notice for reckless wounding.
He is due to appear at Ryde Local Court on March 14.
Police on Wednesday said the weapon involved in the incident had recently been bought from a Sydney market and was potentially lethal.
“A compound boy is like an old bow and arrow from Robin Hood days but they have two pulleys on either end which make them much more powerful than a normal bow,” Commander of the Eastwood Local Area Command Superintendent Peter Marcon told AAP on Wednesday.
“They are used mainly for hunting but they do also use them in archery contests.
“My understanding is that they can be lethal up to 300 or 400 metres.”
Supt Marcon said the bow was not considered a firearm and it was not illegal to own one.
