Speedway events have been cancelled in Townsville tonight as a mark of respect for sidecar rider Gary Moon who died after crashing during a race last night.

Peter Gage from the Show Society Speedway says Moon was one of the most respected sidecar riders in the country.

He said Moon’s son was in the same race that killed his father.

“He’s won multiple Queensland titles. He’s won Australian titles and he’s even won a world title,” he said.

“So he’s put a lot into the sport and he’s now in the situation where he was training his sons to follow in his footsteps.

“And young Tyler, he was on the back of one of the sidecars in the same race unfortunately.”

Mr Gage says police and Motorcycling Queensland are investigating.

“This was just a racing incident. The two guys had different lines heading into the corner and unfortunately when they got to the corner those lines clashed,” he said.

“And one of the bikes, Gary’s especially, it tipped over and in him being put onto the track, he was in the path of the following bike.”
