CES 2012 Preview: 5-Inch Samsung ‘Galaxy Note’ Smartphone

There has been no official word from Samsung yet on whether or not the company’s new 5.29-inch Android smartphone, the Galaxy Note, will be appearing at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. But the device has shipped (to stores, not to individual customers) 1 million units internationally so far, and according to Andy Boxall of Digital Trends a Samsung representative said that “The speed of the global sales is expected to accelerate further [in 2012] when it will be available in the US.”

With “the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow” coming up on January 10, it’s possible that Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note at CES. And from the looks of the leaked email that SamMobile received, the US version of the device may be available on ATT.

But what is it like, and is it worth waiting for … especially if the wait turns out to be longer than expected?

The “Galaxy Note Story”

According to Samsung’s product page, the Galaxy Note is designed to be a true all-in-one device. It combines a tablet-style screen with a smartphone’s size, as well as a fine-tipped stylus for freehand note-taking (which only works on the Galaxy Note). Samsung says it was “created to reflect your desires,” and “will minimize the need to switch to other devices while on the go.”

Form factor

The resulting gadget looks something like a cross between a tablet and a smartphone … or else, just a really big smartphone. It has a camera, a screen, and a home button, in exactly the places you’d expect. And the stylus slides into the phone body, Palm Pilot (or Nintendo DS) style. Unlike those two devices, however, the screen is capacitive like an iPhone’s, so you’ll use your fingertip instead of your fingernails on it.

Technical specs

The “Network differs by country,” but the Galaxy Note is designed to have 4G LTE wireless speeds, along with a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor. It can record 1080p video, can play back 720p video at its native resolution, and has 16 GB of flash memory plus a microSD card slot.

Software experience

The Galaxy Note runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and is scheduled be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the next few months. A wide range of “Value-added Features” is overlaid on top, including the standard Google apps but also including Touchwiz and Samsung “Apps for Galaxy Note,” like S Memo.

But will it work for you?

Reviewers have expressed doubt about the Galaxy Note’s enormous form factor. Wendy Donnell of PCMag found it “small and comfortable enough to use with a single hand,” but said “it’s tough to picture the masses” putting mini-tablets to their ears to use as cellphones. Meanwhile, “superhero” Dustin Curtis noted that the iPhone’s 3.5-inch screen is more convenient than a large Android phone’s for reaching across with your thumb.

If the Galaxy Note makes its way to US shores, you may get a chance to find out for yourself.
