Lavrov made the remarks on Friday in Moscow while his country was pushing for the quick adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution approving the deployment of observers to monitor the cease-fire in Syria.

“There are not only peaceful protesters who of course have a right to the peaceful expression of their views. There are also armed groups operating there. They mastermind terrorist attacks among other things. I’ve already said, not once, that there are those people, from outside Syria too, who want to derail (UN-Arab League envoy Kofi) Annan’s plan,” Lavrov stated.

The Kofi Annan peace plan for Syria was announced in February 2012, and mandates a nationwide ceasefire across Syria that took effect on April 10.

Lavrov said that it was necessary for everyone to “unite around” the UN-Arab League plan, and “put pressure on all groups in Syria without any exception to make them cooperate in the implementation of this plan.”

Meanwhile, a new survey shows that most Russians believe that Moscow will continue to support the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad despite Western efforts to undermine Damascus.

Eighty seven percent of the respondents to the poll conducted by the Russian Ria Novosti news agency between March 26 and 28 said they believed that their country will not stop supporting Damascus, while 11 percent voiced the opposite opinion. Two percent said they had no idea.

The poll also revealed that 53 percent of the respondents approved of the continuation of Russia’s support for Assad, compared to a figure of 46 percent who expressed opposition to such support.

Russia, along with China, has blocked two UN Security Council resolutions against the Syrian government.

Moscow has repeatedly said it is against any foreign military interference in Syria and that the Syrian unrest must be resolved through dialogue.
