One man’s passion has brought an unusual event to central Queensland, with the town of Biloela hosting the 4th National Historical Machinery Association Tractor Trek.
The three-day annual rally involves enthusiasts travelling upwards of 70km a day across rugged rural terrain – in tractors.
Its 2012 version is thanks to Callide Dawson Machinery Preservation Club president Ron King, who owns 40 tractors, about half of them pre-1960 models he had to rebuild.
He’s driving a 1960 Massey Ferguson in the rally and says it’s an event somebody just has to do.
“We went over to Pinjar near Perth last year to take part in the event and we were very keen to host the event this year,” he said.
It may not be hosted in Biloela next year but Mr King is keen to stage his own trek in future.
“It’s an excellent thing for the township as it brings in people from around Australia,” he said.
Club treasurer Cindy Cooper agrees.
“They spend money, which has a flow-on effect for our town,” she said.
“We’ve also asked community groups to do catering for the event and functions which gives money back to them to invest in their own projects.”
Mrs Cooper says as well as short-term benefits, there are intangible ones for the town.
“You also get people coming back and it attracts visitors, which is a long term benefit for the town,” she said.
The trek began on Tuesday and is set to finish on Thursday.
