Celebrity chefs feed 1000 in Sydney

Lamb, chicken and pork have been thrown on sizzling hot plates in Sydney, as celebrity chefs and top CEOS cooked for 1000 people in need.

Long white tables lined Cathedral Square in the heart of Sydney’s CBD on Monday night, with celebrity chefs such as George Calombaris from MasterChef, Maggie Beer, Bill Granger and Neil Perry gathering for the inaugural CEO CookOff.

Ronni Kahn, founder of Oz Harvest, which is expected to salvage two million meals from delis, restaurants and corporate events this year, said the night gave those receiving a meal dignity.

“Most people see disadvantaged people and turn their heads when they see them on the streets because they don’t know what to do with them,” Ms Kahn told AAP.

“I thought it was a marvellous opportunity for those CEOs that never get an opportunity to mingle and talk with some real Aussies.”

She said there were around 150,000 to 300,000 people who don’t have a square meal a day in Australia, which affected children’s ability to concentrate at school.

Judy, who has struggled with homelessness and drug addiction since she was a teenager, said she was getting her life back on track.

“I’ve got a place to live, I’ve stopped using and I’ve got a job,” she told AAP.

“I’m just happy to be here with my brother, my husband, my sister and my Mum and Dad.”

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said the event sought to increase people’s engagement with one of our major social issues.

Chef Neil Perry said OzHarvest was “the most gorgeous idea”.

“You are taking something that’s going to be thrown in the bin, utilising it and bringing it to charities to feed the homeless.

“They can then utilise money to spend on frontline staff and grow the amount of people they can help.”

By Monday night the event had raised more than $840,000 for OzHarvest and Mission Australia.
