Britain’s post-war Communist Party newspaper Daily Worker was of minority interest. Subsidised by the Kremlin, this flaccid organ was voguish amongst the pretentious literati.
Although Communist Party members were few in number, the newspaper, later renamed Morning Star, was popular. A Party member let me into the secret. The working class, who like to place a bet on the horses, bought the Daily Worker to read “Cayton’s Choice”. The Communist Party newspaper’s horse racing tipster was very good at his predictions.
Having placed their racing bets, workers would absorb the rest of the newspaper’s pro-Stalin propaganda. The tipster was the sprat who acted as bait for working class mackerel.
Nothing changes. Although polls suggest only 6% of readers believe media to be trustworthy, conventional newspapers and TV still command dominant market share. Alternative news portals simply don’t compete. Is this because they have yet to cotton on?
People do not buy into conventional media for world news; they do so for entertainment, fashion stories, readers’ letters, health issues, sport, and celebrity gossip. However, whilst their noses are between the sheets readers are indoctrinated by political spin.
During the 1970s my tabloid, The Phoenix, always exceeded its impressive print-run. Its success was due to my copying the experts. The anti-immigration Phoenix, apart from promoting anti-Communism, offered humour and stories readers relate to. Inside were fascinating pictures, sport included; even a crossword puzzle. I was applying the Cayton’s Choice solution; it works, dammit.
Valerie Tyndall, wife of my then arch rival, National Front Chairman John Tyndall, confided in me. ‘John and I always look forward to our copies of the Phoenix. John’s Spearhead is rarely opened.’
I smiled; Spearhead was suitable only as a remedy for insomnia. The periodical was of wall-to-wall political comment and of little interest to plebeians.
Might it not be an idea to include fashion, classical or other music genres, sport, humour, puzzles, health issues to our ethnic-European news portals? This will attract the non-political who, whilst browsing their news interests, will be drawn into ethnic-European issues. By doing so we could find that we finally compete with conventional media.
