‘Cars becoming unaffordable in UK’

A survey conducted by the Countryside Alliance, a British organization promoting the interests of rural people, revealed that while the price of diesel has risen to 146.9p a liter British people living in rural areas have to pay more than those who live in urban areas.

“Not only do people living in rural areas have to drive further to go to work, further to access essential services like schools, doctors and the supermarket, but they have to pay a lot more for their diesel to do so,” said Barney White-Spunner, the executive chairman of the organization.

“The cost of fuel is a major concern for everyone who lives in the countryside, and cars are fast becoming an unaffordable necessity for many rural families,” he added.

Country Alliance also urged upon the British chancellor George Osborne “to cut fuel duty in his forthcoming Budget.”

The organization’s call for a fuel duty relief comes as the Sun reported on 26 February that Osborne would approve a crippling fuel duty which would drive the price of diesel and petrol further up.

A spokesman for AA, which provides British motorists with advice, warned that pump prices in Britain would rise 1p a liter for every USD 2 rise in the price of a barrel of oil.

The price of oil has been rising since Iran announced it would stop oil supplies to Britain and France. On 2 March, oil prices hit a ten-month high with the price of Brent Crude Oil reaching USD 126.20 a barrel.
