Foreign Minister Bob Carr has wrapped up his high-level meeting in Beijing with the man who will become the second most powerful person in China.
Senator Carr entered the high-security Zhongnanhai compound for a meeting with Li Keqiang, who will be the premier after October’s leadership shuffle.
Both Mr Li and Senator Carr spoke of 2012 as a key anniversary for China and Australia and focused on strengthening the nations’ bilateral relationship.
Yesterday, Senator Carr said his visit to Beijing had been dominated by China’s concerns over Australia’s military ties with the United States.
As well as having to defend Australia’s defence arrangements, Senator Carr raised recent controversial consular cases involving Chinese-Australian businesspeople who have ended up in jail there.
Senator Carr has left Beijing and will travel to the north-eastern city of Shenyang for business-related meetings.
