Carla Bruni had ‘brief but passionate’ affair with France’s new foreign minister

“It was brief but very passionate, and it’s one which we are now going to
hear a lot about,” said a Socialist Party source who claims to know
both Mr Fabius and Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy well.

“At the time Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy was very much a left-winger with plenty of
friends in the Socialist Party. Mr Fabius was France’s youngest ever Prime
Minister in the mid-1980s, and Carla found this very attractive indeed.”

According to Ms Benaim, the pair had a fling in the early 2000s, but “Mr
Fabius’s colleagues and friends were very discreet about the whole thing.”

The affair is understood to have ended well before she began dating Mr
Sarkozy.

In an interview just before she married Mr Sarkozy, the 44-year-old former
supermodel said “monogamy bores me”.

One of her more high-profile affairs was with the philosopher Raphael
Enthoven, whom she started sleeping with while officially going out with his
father, Jean-Paul Enthoven.

Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy had a son with Raphael, and was blamed for destroying his
marriage to the writer Justine Levy.

But after becoming France’s First Lady she turned into a loyal conservative
wife, and last year had her first child with Mr Sarkozy.

Mr Fabius, a divorcee, on Thursday started his new job as France’s foreign
minister after being appointed by Francois Hollande.

Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy, meanwhile, was starting a sunshine holiday in the Moroccan
city of Marrakech with her husband and their seven month old daughter,
Giulia.

The family have often stayed in the country as guests of King Mohammed VI, who
last year gave them an entire palace to enjoy.
