Carbon Emissions Reduced 23% by Northeast Greenhouse Gas Trading Program

Quickly, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative has just issued a Compliance Summary Report, with some encouraging findings (h/t Yale e360).

With 206 of the 211 power plants in subject to the program reporting, for the period of Jan 1, 2009 to Dec 31, 2011, “average CO2 emissions for the three-year period were 126 million short tons, a 23 percent reduction compared to the preceding three-year period.”

During the same period total electricity consumption in the region declined 2.4%.
