(Scroll down for video) A car that was towed from an accident scene contained a dead woman who police failed to notice, according to press reports in North Carolina.

The dead body was inside of her wrecked car for three days after being ordered towed by a state trooper from the scene of the accident.

Carolyn Ann Watkins, 62, of Clayton was reported missing by her son early Monday after she failed to appear at work.
An accident report filed Friday by a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper Marlon Williams stated that her 2000 Pontiac was found Friday morning in a deep ditch near Smithfield, about 30 miles southeast of Raleigh. Both airbags were deployed.

“Note: No driver at the scene of the collision,” Williams wrote in his report.
The Highway Patrol had a local towing company move the car to a storage facility, where it remained until her body was found Monday night by a Smithfield police officer looking for clues to her disappearance.

It was not immediately clear when Watkins died. She was last seen alive Friday.
Watkins’ son, Al Parker, wondered if her mother’s life could have been saved if the trooper had noticed her in the car.
“I’m thinking she could still be alive,” Parker said Tuesday. “Why don’t they look inside the car? When they pulled the car, why was the body not noticed?” Parker asked.

“We hear about cars getting ticketed without the agent noticing a body inside, all the time. However, why would an officer at an accident scene not look inside of a wrecked car to see if someone is inside? This is complete incompetence,” Andrea Reed, 40, of Reliagh, North Carolina told YourJewishNews.com after reading about the case.

Williams, a nine year veteran of the Highway Patrol, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal review that is being carried out with the help of the State Bureau of Investigation.

Dustin Towing Company, the company that towed the car said they were ordered by police not to talk about the case.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
