‘CAR on brink of massive catastrophe’

The Red Cross has warned that the Central African Republic is on the brink of a “massive humanitarian catastrophe.”

The organization’s president in CAR, Antoine Mbao Bogo, gave the warning in a statement on Friday, saying the situation in the country not only became stabilized but worsened last month with an increase in inter-communal violence.

Bogo said the humanitarian situation in the capital, Bangui, is “very difficult,” but “in the countryside it is becoming unbearable.”

According to the organization’s CAR president, there is shortage of drugs at hospitals as well as lack of food supplies. In addition, those who are displaced by the violence often have no access to shelter and proper sanitation.

Bogo also described the violent conflict as “a silent disaster,” which has not received sufficient international attention and support.

The statement by the Red Cross came a day after John Ging, the director of the Operation Division for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), warned of an impending genocide in the country, adding that the CAR crisis was foreseen, avoidable and produced by the international community’s neglect over many years.

The Central African Republic spiraled into chaos in March 2013, when Seleka fighters unseated President Francois Bozizé and brought Michel Djotodia to power. Bozizé fled the country after his ouster.

On January 10, both Djotodia and Prime Minister Nicolas Tiengaye resigned after coming under intense pressure over the government’s failure to stem the deadly violence.

France has deployed hundreds of troops to its former colony under the pretext of establishing stability in the country.

Hundreds of people have died and nearly a million others have been displaced due to the conflict in the Central African Republic.
