Car bomb kills 2 in Damascus

According to reports by witnesses and local media outlets, a booby-trapped car, laden with heavy explosives, blew up in the Daf al-Shouk suburb late on Saturday.

The overnight blast is the latest in a string of bomb attacks that have rocked Damascus and Aleppo, the second largest Syrian city.

Earlier in the day, a car rigged with explosives was detonated in Aleppo, killing six people, and two bombings seriously damaged vehicles and buildings in Damascus.

The Syrian media has blamed the attacks on foreign-sponsored terrorists.

Meanwhile, the UN observers continue monitoring a ceasefire, which has officially been in effect for more than three weeks.

The ceasefire is part of a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in March.

The first group of UN observers arrived in Damascus late on April 15, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2042, which was approved on April 14.

On April 21, the UN Security Council met and unanimously approved Resolution 2043, which ratified a proposal to send a mission of 300 observers to Syria.
