Captors threatened to kill Iranian pilgrims

“They told us to say that we are Iranian soldiers that have come here to kill the people of Syria. They added that if we didn’t do as they said, they would not free us and may even kill us,” Hassan Bazigar, one of the abducted Iranian pilgrims said.

The armed group calling itself Free Syrian Army, also uploaded a video of abducted Iranians, claiming they were part of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

To prove their false claim, they showed a copy of personal cards, which are in fact issued for all adult males in Iran after they complete their compulsory military service.

The five abductees were part of 11 Iranian pilgrims who were kidnapped near the Syrian city of Aleppo in late January.

“Two to three hours after we left the city of Aleppo, anti-government forces of Syria attacked our bus. When they boarded the bus, they separated 11 of us and took us away, but they didn’t tell us anything,” said Nouroddin Baharvand, another freed Iranian pilgrim.

The pilgrims were released at the Syria-Turkey border on March 30 and were transferred to the southern Turkish city of Hatay before being handed over to the Iranian consulate in Istanbul to arrange their return to Iran.

At the moment, 13 Iranian citizens including engineers, technicians and pilgrims are still held captive in Syria.

The country has been the scene of unrest since mid-March, 2011.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
