A inquiry examining the future of ethics classes in New South Wales has discussed topics ranging from cannibalism to burning in hell.

A state parliamentary committee is considering whether legislation allowing the classes to be taught as an alternative to scripture lessons should be repealed.

The inquiry was launched after the State Government referred a Christian Democrats bill to abolish the classes to the Upper House committee, which is dominated by conservative MPs.

Labor MP Greg Donnelly was keen to know what would happen if a child asked about cannibalism in an ethics class.

“How would that be tackled as an issue?” he asked.

He was reassured by Simon Longstaff from the St James Ethics Centre, where the course was devised.

“If the point of the question is, could a child at the end of the conversation walk out thinking killing someone so you can eat them might be OK, the answer would be no,” Dr Longstaff said.

Catherine Suttle, a member of pro ethics classes group Parents 4 Ethics, became involved in a heated exchange with Liberal MP David Clarke, who asked her about the views of ethicist Professor Peter Singer.

“You are aware that he has justified sexual relations between humans and animals? Are you aware of that?” Mr Clarke said.

“No,” she replied.

“You’re not aware of that, but you’d be concerned about that wouldn’t you?” Mr Clarke continued.

“I’m not going to answer that part of the question,” Ms Suttle said.

Another parent complained to the committee that some children in scripture classes were told they would burn in hell if they did not follow Jesus.
