The filmed murder is believed to have taken place on May 24 or May 25 and
police believe Magnotta boarded a flight for France on May 26.
With the help of his mobile phone signal, police traced him to a hotel in the
Parisian suburb of Bagnolet.
Witnesses reported seeing him at two bars in the city. One man described
meeting Magnotta at a bar and letting him stay at his house for two nights.
As police closed in, Magnotta was believed to have fled Paris for Berlin by
bus. A bus station employee reported seeing him board a bus on Friday night.
He was arrested after a person at an internet café on Karl Marx Strasse in
Berlin recognised him and called police. Magnotta was said to have spent an
hour in the café and put up no resistance. As detectives arrived, he said: “You
got me”.
The former prostitute and stripper was born Eric Newman in Toronto, and also
used the alias Vladimir Romanov. He had undergone plastic surgery in an
attempt to look like James Dean.
He had previously been linked to videos posted on the internet showing kittens
being killed.
