Three men were found dead in this caravan at Miena in Tasmania’s central highlands.

lThe tight-knit community of Miena in Tasmania’s central highlands is in shock after the death of three men in a camping accident.

A 50-year-old man, his 21-year-old son and a family friend were on a hunting expedition near Little Pine Lagoon.

They went to sleep on Friday night in a caravan that was fitted out with a gas refrigerator.

Police believe gas from the refrigerator may have poisoned the men during the night.

A fourth member of their party came to meet them on Saturday morning and found all three dead.

Gayleen Thompson works at the Miena general store and said the man who found the trio came into the store about 8:00am and asked for the nearest police.

“The little boy was devastated, he was crying, and the man was a mess,” Ms Thompson said.

“Everybody is in shock. We were really, really worried because you never know who it’s going to be up here. Everyone that’s been in here this morning is just in shock. It’s just devastating news.”

Social media tributes are flowing for the men, two of whom come from Launceston and one from Hobart.

On a Facebook page a woman described one of the group as “a truly great man who’ll be sadly missed”.

Police said they were not treating the deaths as suspicious but would prepare a report for the Coroner.
